Close to the mainland the clear waters of this tropical island paradise will cleanse your mind and set you on the path of relaxation.
Looking out over so many variations of blue water, the adjectives teal, cerulean, sapphire, azure and turquoise come to mind. I’m at the highest point on Castaway Island, a private island resort in the heart of Fiji’s Mamanuca Island Group, located 30 kilometres (18 miles) from the main island of Vitu Levu. I’ve climbed the ‘bushwalk,’ a dirt track winding its way upwards through dense tropical rainforest finishing at lookout number ‘two.’ Twenty minutes of walking in the clutches of humidity, creating a drenching sweat. For my efforts, I’m rewarded with spectacular views to the north. Tree-covered volcanic islands of varying sizes breakup the vast hues of blue. Squinting, I can just make out Monuriki island, famous as the location for the filming of Tom Hank’s movie Cast Away.
